Happiness Happens Day falls on August 8 every year and is preceded by Hunt for Happiness Week which in turn forms part of Happiness Happens Month. Now, that might sound like a whole lot of happiness going on and you’d be right – August is just one big tidal wave of cheerfulness. So, if you’re like me and revel in your grumpiness, you better strap yourself in and prepare for the ride.
The whole concept was dreamed up by a group called the Secret Society of Happy People back in 1998. Now, I don’t know about you, but any group that calls themselves a “secret society” sounds a bit shady to me. I mean, if you are so happy, why all the secrecy? Anyway, someone must’ve pointed this out to them because they later dropped the secret part and changed their name to the Society of Happy People.
Even the most cynical amongst us can’t knock anyone for wanting to spread a little cheer. We all know one of those irrepressibly cheerful people whose permanent state of euphoria is rather infectious. When you are in their company, you can’t help but raise a smile and feel a little better about your day. Happiness is contagious and without these people, the world would be a much gloomier place. So, even if you are the type whose idea of true happiness is being miserable and moaning a lot, this is the time of year to let go of your disagreeable nature and pass on some cheer.
Happiness Happens Day is all about spreading joy and looking on the bright side. It’s about letting go and not feeling constrained. In the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, there is a line that goes: “Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.” Now, like many others, I wondered what the hell he was going on about but Williams later explained that the lyric was “Metaphorical for one’s space without limit.” He added, “This emotion can be infinite and achievable by all.” Well, you can’t really argue with that.
The day encourages people to speak about their happiness and to listen to others. It is a day to remember happy and positive moments, and to forget the negativity. It is a day for sending positive messages or funny GIFs and videos to people you know. And it is a day for performing random acts of kindness to friends and strangers alike.
Even the smallest gestures can put a smile on someone’s face, so make it your mission to do whatever it takes to make people happy. And try not to do it through gritted teeth. Who knows, you might even enjoy it and decide to continue spreading happiness across the whole month or even throughout the year. If not, don’t worry, you can go back to being a grumpy old cynic until the next Happiness Happens Day comes around.
