When many of us head out for a long day at work, the hardest part is often bidding farewell to our four-legged friends. If you have ever experienced your dog throwing a tantrum or crying up a storm as you grab your car keys and head out the door, you’ll know that the feeling is mutual.
That’s why some canine-loving clever clogs came up with the annual Take Your Dog to Work Day all the way back in 1999, which is typically celebrated the first Sunday after Father’s Day every June. Take Your Dog to Work Day is a way of bringing man’s best friend into the office and promoting better accessibility for those of us with pets.
Read on to find out what you need to know about Take Your Dog to Work Day.
The event was actually created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International (PSI), the official global association for pet sitters and animal lovers worldwide. The inspiration behind the idea was partly as a way of celebrating your beloved pet, but that’s not the whole story.
In fact, PSI actually intended for the day to promote pet adoption and encourage it among those who are yet to make the leap. The logic behind this cheeky little marketing trick is that coworkers will see just how happy the pet owner is in the office and will then be inspired to go out and adopt one of their very own.
If one thing is certain, it’s that more people have adopted pets since the launch of TYDTWD. In the US alone, a record high of 67% of households own a pet. On top of this, one in three people adopted a pet just in the past year. It seems that there will be no shortage of participants for the next Bring Your Dog to Work Day.
1. The simplest way to celebrate the big day is to bring your dog to work, of course! Research has shown that more and more offices around the world are becoming pet-friendly, partly as a means of making certain businesses more attractive places to work. By bringing your furry friend into the office, they can soak up the new environment and enjoy all of the extra attention from your coworkers, while you don’t have to worry about what your pet is getting up to while you’re out!
2. If you want to celebrate our beloved pets more generally, you could always spend your free time playing a couple of rounds of a popular pet-themed slot game! For example, the official Dog House slot game allows you to really let the dogs out while also playing for major jackpots. Meanwhile, the official Cats and Dogs slot is a virtual celebration of the most popular pets, where you can rack up sassy cats and friendly pups on the reels to win big.
